Whoa, Canada, That Was a Heckuva Game

Under the comically stressful pressure of a hockey mad nation and the loving gaze of Star Trek superfan William Shatner Canada’s starry and starrily compensated Olympic team topped the U.S. in sudden death overtime, 3-2, in an exhilarating men’s hockey gold-medal final.

…it felt like a sartorial mandate from the prime minister. We wore a bland black windbreaker and got threatened with a 10-minute penalty for a fashion misconduct.

Inside Sassy Haus, two widescreens carried the live Canadian feed of the game. This was a cultural adjustment for us, as we are accustomed to watching our Olympic events interspersed with delightful lumberjack features, and to watching our live events on tape sometime around 9 p.m. As the slogan goes, What Happens in Vancouver Happens on NBC Four Hours Later.
But enough of those gripes. The Peacock wisely went live on Sunday, for what proved to be the marquee drama of the Olympics. We’d seen thrills from Bode, Shaun, Lindsey and Julia and let’s not forget those icy-hot Nordic combined fellows but Vancouver’s last puff from the Olympic flame was its best.

Some signs of the coming STO apocalypse.

…Star Trek Online is not doing well folks. Look, I like the game. I’ve been trying to support it since beta…but something wicked this way comes…The STO apocalypse is upon us, and here are the signs.

The state of the game as seen by the average gamer logging in amounts to a dead server throughout most of the day. If it weren’t for the few vocal people in Zone chat (who are all bashing the game BTW), the server would seem super dead.

If you try to play at any time but primetime, you are met with a universe that is slowly emptying, like the water spiralling down the bathtub drain. PVP queues, which used to be packed, are now so empty no game ever gets started. Rooms where 35ish people used to wait in queue are now filled with 1-4 people usually on one side or the other, stuck waiting for…NOTHING…because the game will not properly start.

PVP is dead.

Auto-grouping is yet another sign of the STO apocalypse. Where a few weeks back, you could enter one of the auto-grouping levels at any time of the day…

…In a surprise move, Cryptic has already initiated a buddy key trial program. This is in the face of massive gold spam already present in the game and in the forum mailbox. According to reports, Cryptic claimed over 1 million players in the retail head start. This is a pretty nice starting number for ANY fledgling MMO, so why they would feel the need to increase it further this early on is beyond me.

For example, complaints flood the forums about the queue system and how the server is always full at prime time in the US. One would think the company would take the time to increase ppulation flow through and stability before initiating a buddy key/trial program.

Besides that, other companies that have offered early buddy key systems or “invite-a-friend” programs have also offered rewards for converted accounts. Not the case here. It’s just a 5 day key, and you must have a retail copy to claim the key, which you will pass on…hopefully not to a gold seller/spammer.

I don’t mean to be so critical about this,…

I really don’t have it in for Cryptic, the designers of Star Trek Online, though it may seem so if you happened to read my impressions of the Champions Online beta last August. Many called me out for being overly hostile, for being too critical o

…First, the obvious: Cryptic is over-extended as a company. Making a solid MMO is a mammoth undertaking, a chore made all the more difficult by an ever-expanding market and increased competition. If you can’t deliver something as good as or better than the competition then you are doomed. When one considers Cryptic is a relatively small company, it’s utterly amazing they opted to take-on Star Trek and Champions Online at the same time. This business decision spelled disaster for both products as neither has received the attention they require.In terms of Champions Online, Cryptic didn’t face a rabid fan-base full of demands and expectations, so its failure was barely visible to the gaming public. But with Star Trek, Cryptic is messing with a popular brand and its failure to deliver a compelling experience will be far more devastating.The Star Trek Online graphics engine is stale and runs like crap, much like Champions Online. Klingon Captains have the same number of skills available as their Federation counterparts, including the same professions. Your Klingon Captain can be a Science, Engineering or Tactical officer. However, they must advance through PvP, as they will not have access to the same amount of player-vs.-environment content as Federation players at launch….
